TECHNICAL SUPPORT FOR DEVELOPMENT
In many developing countries, there is a lack of detailed and up-to-date geo-information that is needed for strategizing sustainable development. Earth Observation plays a key role in filling these information gaps.
DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION
RSS has a long-term experience in supporting development cooperation projects through technical support worldwide. Our consultancy activities range from project development together with donors, development of new geo-information products in response to demands from local partner organizations, and capacity development (on-the-job trainings and training-of-trainers).
CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT
EMPOWERING PARTNERS
In our capacity development activities, we empower local and international project partners with the aim that trust is built in geospatial products and their uptake is more sustainable. This exchange occurs predominantly during on-the-job trainings or trainings following the training-of-trainers concept, concerning remote sensing, GIS, ground based inventories and surveying. We also offer personalized and dynamic trainings across the globe, which aid international cooperation, spread environmental awareness, and encourage information sharing on local and global scales.
TECHNICAL SUPPORT
TECHNOLOGY IS KEY
Based on the demand defined by user organizations, RSS offers customized development of monitoring techniques and supports institutions in implementing and institutionalizing new monitoring approaches. With Earth Observation data and innovative information extraction approaches, we promote development cooperation in the assessment, planning and evaluation of interventions and also provide quantitative spatial indicators to measure socio-ecological impacts of development cooperation programmes. We focus on best practices of evidence-based decision support that can directly influence policies.
DECISION SUPPORT
PLATFORM SOLUTIONS
Meeting the demand for national EO-based monitoring, e.g. as required in the framework of the sustainable development goals (SDG), requires robust, reproducible and big data processing techniques. Robustness becomes particularly critical when comparing results from different spatial resolutions, dates or locations. Reproducibility ensures that it can deliver reliable results over time and leads to valuable information such as long-term trends. Big data processing is required, since national monitoring often means large-scale mapping and thus big data analysis. RSS provides cloud-based and server-based solutions for automated data processing in support of diverse development cooperation projects.
CLEAN DEVELOPMENT
MECHANISM (CDM)
CARBON MARKET
Climate policy instruments are becoming increasingly important. Joint implementation (JI) and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) are project-based instruments that aim to reduce emissions. Earth Observation can help to define effective and sustainable projects through identifying most suitable areas for reforestation or providing a spatial planning base for restoration activities such as rewetting of peatlands.
We support the preparing of Project Design Documents (PDD) with environmental impact assessments, by analyzing the baseline and by demonstrating the additionality.
