Forests4Future – Training on determining forest biomass using drones

In the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) region peatlands cover approximately 23,6 million hectares, representing 56% of global tropical peatlands. However, their exact extent in most of these countries is not well known since the identification by field-based methods is time consuming and expensive due to the enormous extent of the countries and additionally due to difficult accessibility of many areas.

SAR-based burned area mapping training in Indonesia

Within the framework of the GIZ's FORCLIME programme, RSS was recently hosting a week-long training on burned area detection using Sentinel-1 satellite data. Over 20 Indonesian officials from MoEF, LAPAN and provincial authorities explored how Sentinel-1 data could be used to complement Landsat-based burned area mapping in Indonesia.

Using InSAR to determine above-ground biomass in tropical forests

The international research project Pol-InSAR4AGB focused on the development of algorithms and the creation of process chains for the integrative use of multi-sensor X- and C-band SAR data using Pol-InSAR techniques for the determination of forest height and above-ground biomass in tropical forests.

Mapping global forest biomass using satellite imagery

Biomass is a fundamental biophysical variable that quantifies the Earth’s living vegetation. It has profound social and economic importance as a source of materials and energy, and its state, dynamics and resilience have impacts on the whole Earth system. The main purpose of the GlobBiomass project was to better characterize and to reduce uncertainties of above ground biomass estimates.
