RSS and partners (United Nations University, Welthungerhilfe) successfully held an online webinar, titled ‘Drought risk assessment validation webinar’ for stakeholders in Zimbabwe. The online meeting took place in the context of the BMBF-funded GlobeDrought project.
The main objective of the Webinar was to engage and outreach to decision-makers, resource managers, researchers, and the development aid community in Zimbabwe. Specifically, the consortium aimed at (1) validating the drought risk and other localized drought assessment results for Zimbabwe, and (2) evaluating the utility of the GlobeDrought products for use-cases in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe has been particularly affected by droughts in the past, causing continuing and cascading impacts on different sectors across numerous spatial scales. During the meeting, RSS introduced the provisional version of the online GlobeDrought portal, which bundles spatial information products from the project across several scales and drought risk sectors.
OUTCOMES and PERSPECTIVES from the meeting
The GlobeDrought information can very well help to formulate the National Drought Management Plan that is currently being developed by Zimbabwe. An interactive survey from the participants, furthermore, helped to confirm that communities living within certain districts in Zimbabwe, such as Buhera and Chivi, are at most vulnerable and exposed to high drought risk. The Globe Drought information portal, furthermore, was graded to be of high relevance to decision making processes in Zimbabwe, easy to access and user friendly.
The workshop participants helped to confirm the validity many project results and it was encouraging to note that the products and the portal are relevant to the research and decision making agenda in Zimbabwe. A GlobeDrought results may well be complimentary to other existing data sets and information portals.
